When to Recover vs Replace: Cloth Decision Tree

When to Recover vs Replace: Cloth Decision Tree

Estimated Read Time: 6 mins | Updated:

The playing surface is the soul of a pool table. Over time, chalk, friction, spills, and sunlight all leave their mark on cloth. But not every imperfection calls for a full replacement. Sometimes a simple re-covering of the slate and rails is enough. Other times, the cloth has reached its end of life and needs outright replacement. Here’s a decision tree to help you know which path to take.

Table of Contents

1. Assess the Age of the Cloth

  • < 2 Years (light to moderate play): Likely recoverable unless visibly damaged.
  • 2–5 Years: Inspect carefully β€” wear patterns may justify replacement.
  • 5+ Years: Cloths typically lose nap, color, and consistency. Replacement is usually best.

2. Look for Surface Damage

  • Burn Marks: Cosmetic if isolated β€” recover if intact otherwise.
  • Tears or Cuts: Replacement required; patches ruin play consistency.
  • Heavy Pilling / Fuzz: If brushing can’t restore smoothness, replace.

3. Check Play Quality

  • Roll Speed Still Consistent?
Yes β†’ Recover if only aesthetics are the issue.
No β†’ Replace; worn cloth slows and affects accuracy.
  • Ball Tracking Straight?
    Yes β†’ Recover.
No β†’ Replace; uneven nap or stretched fabric alters ball paths.

4. Evaluate Color & Aesthetic

  • Slight Fading: Recover may be enough.
  • Significant Fading / Stains / Sun Damage: Replacement restores appearance.

5. Inspect the Slate & Cushions

  • Slate & Cushions Fine: Cloth-only replacement is efficient.
  • Slate Gaps or Cushion Issues: Replace cloth while servicing underlying structure.

6. Usage Context

  • Private Home (Light Play): Cloth lasts 4–7 years; recovering may extend life.
  • Commercial / Club Use: High turnover β€” replacement every 12–18 months.
  • Tournament Play: Replace on a set schedule for consistency.

7. Decision Tree (Summary)

  • Minor cosmetic issue + good play quality β†’ Recover
  • Structural damage (tears, stretch, uneven roll) β†’ Replace
  • Over 5 yea
